Dr. Ulrich Rothbauer joins CeNS as Extraordinary Member

Ulrich Rothbauer studied biology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) in Munich. After finishing his Diploma Thesis in the lab of Prof. Svante Pääbo working on tRNA processing in human mitochondria he started his dissertation at the laboratory of Prof. Walter Neupert at the Medical Faculty at the LMU. In his thesis he focused on the molecular basis of a mitochondrial disease - the Mohr-Tranebjearg Syndrom. 2004 he returned to the Department of Biology of the LMU as a PostDoc in the laboratory of Prof. Heinrich Leonhardt working on the functional analysis of DNA Methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1). In 2005 he started together with Prof. Leonhardt to work on camelid antibodies, nanobodies and chromobodies. In 2007 he became an independent group leader to explore and develop new applications and technologies based on the Chromobody-Technology.

Since 2008 he is also a cofounder and the CEO of the LMU start company ChromoTek. His future goals are to expand the Chromobody-Technology and develop marketable products and applications for biomedical research.
